SKINCARE RULES FOR DRY SKIN

Dry skin can be normal and, at the same time, a cause for worry. The side to having dry skin no one likes is when it becomes itchy and starts scaling. Most time, dry skin occurs due to a lack of vitamin B and other times, it’s the effect of using the wrong products on your skin. No matter how bad a skin type is, it can continually be improved to do better. It can be hard to change our skin type, but many products make it better to handle.

CAUSES OF DRY SKIN

Weather: Different weather conditions affect the sin. When the weather is hot in summer, it plays a lousy number on people with dry skin. The skin dries out more during the winter season. In winter, the humidity level is low, and this affects the skin. When the humidity level is low, it makes the water in the air less available and therefore leaving your skin dry.

Sun Exposure: The sun is damaging to the skin and makes the skin dry. The sun leaves the skin dehydrated. It also disrupts the oil on the surface of the skin. Wearing sunscreen is one of the best ways to avoid dry skin.

Alcohol: The effect of alcohol on the skin ranges from the products to drinking of alcohol. Drinking alcohol dehydrates the skin, while using a product made with alcohol can be harsh to the skin. Skincare products like cleaning alcohol leave your skin dry and scaling; it is worse when you already have dry skin.

Hot baths & swimming: There is nothing more drying on the skin than the constant use of hot water. Taking a long shower can be therapeutic, but it causes more harm than good to the skin. Having a long bath or being in chlorinated water causes dry skin. Swimming in chlorinated water too often dries the skin. The hot water strips your skin of its oil. Replacing hot baths with lukewarm or cold water is best for people with dry skin.

Medications: If you follow all your skincare routines and still find out that your skin is drying out, it’s time to check the medicines you have been on lately. Some medications have a drying skin as one of their effects, not restricted only to drugs for skin conditions. Different medication can cause dry skin. Ensure to ask your doctor the next time a medication is prescribed to you.

 

Ageing: The skin produces less oil with age. When the oil production on the skin reduces, it becomes dehydrated, and this leads to dryness. The skin tends to hold less oil and also struggles with the absorption of products with age.

Fragrance: Products with fragrance are discomforting for people with dry skin. Products that contain some fragrances and crude essential oils will only worsen the situation of the skin.

Sulfates: If you use natural skincare products, you may not have to worry about products with sulfates. Sulfates are draining as they strip the skin of their natural oils. Avoid skincare products that contain sulfates.

Different treatments make the skin better. Also, the result you get is dependent on your level of consistency. Now that you know the causes of your dry skin, it’s time to understand and follow the rules to improve or make your skin better.

i. USE A MOISTURIZER; A hydrating moisturizer should be your skin’s best friend if you have dry skin. Moisturizers help your skin retain water. It also promotes the oil found in the skin’s barrier. It is best to apply your moisturizer when the skin is still damp or wet after a shower. Natural oils are best for anyone with dry skin.  Shea butter is a natural hydrating moisturizer and should be added to your skincare routine if you have dry skin. Ointments and creams help you lock in moisture, extend the application to your hands and body too.

ii. EXFOLIATE: We all know that exfoliation is the removal of dead cells on the skin. The facial skin replaces itself every month by shading old cell to accommodate new ones. The old skin cell gets stuck on the face and makes it hard for other products to absorb into the skin. Exfoliation improves the texture of the skin. Physical exfoliation helps remove dead cells from the skin’s surface, making it easier for moisturizers and other skin improvement products to absorb into the skin.

iii. SPEND LESS TIME IN THE SHOWER: It might sound absurd, but limiting your shower time to 5-10 minutes can help heal your skin. The more hours you spend in the shower, the more water removes sebum from the skin. Rather than using hot water, use warm or cold water as it does not strip you of the natural facial oil.

iv. BUY A HUMIDIFIER: An air conditioner can be draining for your skin. It removes the moisture from the air, and this affects the skin. In place of an air conditioner, use a humidifier. Limiting the use of an air conditioner helps your skin indoors.

v. USE MILD SOAPS: Some soaps take the natural oil off the skin. It is best to use gentle cleansers or mild soaps on your skin, especially the face. Soaps with chemicals can irritate the skin and cause discomfort. Avoid skincare products made with fragrance or harsh natural oils.

vi. TAKE AN OATMEAL BATH: Oat reduces itching and inflammation. It is a trick from an old housewife’s book. Fix a warm or cold bath and sprinkle oat into it. Soak yourself in oatmeal for about fifteen minutes in your bathtub.

Switching your skincare products today will help your dry skin heal or improve. Always moisturize your skin. Use a lip balm after exfoliating your lips. Check ingredients every time you purchase skincare products. If you have dry skin,  replace lotions with oils or body butter. Take caution to do treatments that get into the skin as there are different layers. It is best to use a moisturizer when the body is still damp or wet from a shower.
