Why Is Skincare Layering So Important?

To get the best results from your favorite skincare products, you absolutely need to apply them in the right order.

1. The Wrong Order Will Make Some Products Less Potent

To put it simply, skincare products are made up of many different ingredients and textures that work best when used in certain ways. You will find that applying a product before or after another will determine how well either of them works.

2. Your Skin Needs All The Moisture It Can Get

Applying your skincare products the wrong way can deprive your skin of the right amount of moisture it needs. In the mornings especially, your skin needs to be moisturized and that moisture needs to be locked in.

3. Your Skin Might Get Even Worse

When you fail to apply your skincare products in the right order, even if you’re trying to treat acne, hyperpigmentation, or you just want to maintain it, it can get worse. The right order allows your skin to breathe and stay protected from atmospheric particles and even sunlight.

What Is The Right Order For Applying Skincare?

The basic thing you need to know about layering your skincare products is that the texture, ingredients, and skin type matter. Also bear in mind that before you even start applying these products, you’ve cleansed your face preferably with a hydrating cleanser.

1. The Watery Product Always Comes First

The first product that should go on your skin should be light and obviously moisturizing. This allows the other products that you layer on top to absorb better. The product that comes to mind is a toner because most toners are watery but if you have a serum or essence that is lighter in texture then use it first.

For oily skin, it’s best to soak the cotton pad with the toner and wipe your skin. Also bear in mind that AHA toners are better than toners with alcohol. If you have dry skin, you want to absorb as much moisture as possible which would leave your face feeling hydrated. Pour the product into your palm and apply it all over your skin.

2. Exfoliate for Radiance: The Key to Opening Pores and Enhancing Product Absorption

In a case where you feel like your pores are clogged with dead skin cells, especially after a long day, you’ll need to exfoliate first. Doing this would open your pores and allow them to absorb the products best. It’s also best if you use your hand to apply the toner or serum in this case.

3. Thicker Products Come Behind

Just like we mentioned earlier, your skincare layering should start with the wateriest product after which you start applying products with a thicker consistency. Following this  rule allows the products to get absorbed into your skin, allowing them to work effectively.

4. Lock In All That Moisture

The last step in your skincare would be to use oil to lock in all the moisture. It’s almost pointless to do all that great stuff and not use oil. The oil prevents these skincare products from evaporating and exposing your skin.

5. Sunscreen Can’t Be Left Out

If you’re fond of leaving out your sunscreen during your morning skincare routine, please stop! Sunscreen should be the second to last product that goes on your skin and then an oil.

An extra tip would be to take breaks before you apply the next product because it allows your skincare to be more effective especially if they have different pH levels. Applying your skincare products the wrong way is as good as wasting perfectly good products because you won’t get the best out of them. Give these tips a try and you’ll be glad you did!
